What a gorgeous day for running it was. I got downtown sometime around quarter to seven in the morning, and it was a brisk 52 degrees. It was so cool, that I wore a sweatshirt. It reminded me of all of those late fall cross country meets we had in high school. Once I got out of the car, I took in all of the sights that surrounded me. Thousands of runners warming up, people chatting about running, and sun rising to warm up the air. It was a great feeling.
After a mile of warm up, I decided to take a walk to the starting line. It was an amazing sight to see. One that I'd never seen before. 10,000 or so people standing, stretching, and jogging in preparation for their journey through the greater Flint area. I knew this was going to be a great day.
At eight o'clock, I was finally at the starting area. It would still be more than five minutes before I would get to the official starting line, but the excitement was filling my body. It was finally here. All the training I had put in was finally set to pay off. As I walked up to the line, people were snapping pictures and doing their final routines to get themselves ready for the race. Finally, we hit the line and we were off.
It was slow going in the beginning, and I was about a minute off my goal pace by 3 miles, but after the crowded streets began to clear up, and the pack began to stretch out, I finally got the race pace to where I wanted it. At mile five, the Bradley Hills became visible. After a slight struggle with those hills, it was off to complete the second half of the race. In a matter of thirty minutes, the race would be over, and the journey complete.
I finished with a time of 1:17:56 officially. I was impressed by this because I didn't figure I would be much faster than 1:20:00, which is eight minutes per mile. I was excited for what is left for the rest of the year. I plan on doing the Capitol City River Run Half Marathon next. With a descent showing in the Crim, I feel this shouldn't be too much more difficult. For now, I'm just going to keep training. Hopefully, I'll be able to keep this up in the coming months.
I'm out.
