Though I hate to discuss politics on the internet for a wide variety of reasons, I feel I would be remiss if I didn't say this. While I was eating breakfast this morning at a Holiday Inn Express somewhere in Illinois, I watched some of a speech that Bush was giving. I was a little bit shocked to hear him, not once or twice but repeatedly compare extremist Muslims with Communists. Correct me if I'm wrong but after the red curtain fell, didn't most of the worlds population realize that Communism wasn't a tyrannical organization of government developed by the Devil, but rather a well meaning system that fails not because of its own inherent evil but rather the inherent evil of mankind itself and the few who become powerful using it. However, Bush's strongest quality as a leader, and despite what I think of what he does with his sway it is his strongest quality, is his ability to pander to the lowest common denominator. Unfortunately for the rest of us, the lowest common denominator is the nation’s poorest and least educated members. I hope this comparison doesn’t spark another Red Scare. His other strength and the one that helped keep his war approval ratings up for so long is to take these people and convince them that speaking out against White House policy is tantamount to un-American behavior, when in actuality, disagreeing with the government is the most American thing you can do. That's what originally set us apart from every other government at the time of its creation and hopefully the concept will come back again after the next election. I don't have any great conclusion to this, just something I had on my mind and wanted to say.
