Only if you're dumb enough

Only if you're dumb enough to go in there and try to fix it yourself.

My Xbox has been slowly dying over the past year or so, which has made reviewing games for the Herald quite difficult. Yesterday it finally hit the point where it was basically impossible to play and my review was due in the morning. Without having the cash to buy a new Xbox, I got online and did some poking around for a fix. I found a solution that would either fix it or destroy it and with cautious optimism I grabbed my toolbox and dug in. Let me tell you, there is no feeling quite like that of dissecting an expensive electronic toy to the point where one slip of the finger could destroy everything. Sure, I worked on some expensive machines at Print Makers, but there’s something different when it’s mine. I don't know exactly what I did, but basically I turned a tiny screw about 1/8th of a turn counter-clockwise. Whatever the screw was regulating seems to have a profound effect on how well the Xbox works. It didn't completely fix the problem but I would say I went from about a 90% crash rate to about a 10% crash rate. And I only had two screws left over when I was done. Take that Microsoft and your refusal to admit you used shoddy CD/DVD drives so you can continue to charge hundreds of dollars to fix the problem.
